Mid August Is Hot Fishing Is Decent
August 10 2023 – August is often called the “dog days of summer” for deep sea fishing. Mostly because of the warmer calmer days out on the blue water, second because of the slower bite and smaller non legal mahi. This year is a bit different so far. The heat is ON! Its freaking HOT with temps we have not seen, ever in Key West.
Deep Sea Fishing Report
Deep sea fishing report here in Key West on board the INXS has been pretty good. The Gulf Stream is meandering in and out but lately a West bound current has prevailed all the way to 700 ft on some days. Usually the Gulf Stream produces an East bound current. The first week in August we were getting some nice mahi closer and the smaller mahi offshore then the next day it will flip. One day we went to 1500ft to catch only peanut sized mahi then back to the reef closer to short for the nice gaffer size fish. This week the bite has been all over the board. Good news is we have managed some nice size fish for our folks to call dinner. The nice surprise for the summer is our wahoo fishing. Still strong compared to years prior. We are still catching some wahoo when the moon is right.
Our Fishing Tips
Most of our mahi lately have been hanging under birds. Weed lines are usually what we will work for the bite but they have been a bit scarce. When we have found weed lines they are good for a bit then start to fall apart after too long. Sargassum weed is pretty important to our deep sea fishing. Working the birds we have been running baits pretty far back and on the deep troll. Natural rigged ballyhoo have been the best with some good fish hitting the blue and white baits such as the Iland Tracker. There are plenty of fish out there but you have to put in the time to catch them.
Fishing Charter Insight
it is not unrealistic to book a 6 hour deep sea fishing charter and be productive this month. Our 6 hours trips have harvested some nice fish along with lots of action reeling in the smaller ones. Remember the wahoo love the extreme moon phases. We realize our rates are set for the level of our boat the “InXS” so we offer charters on our colleagues key west deep sea fishing charter boats as well that are a little bit more affordable – yet they offer similar amenities. Maybe not as fast, a little older boat or something but still great captains and crew that will work hard and put you on the fish. VERY important to chose a boat that has air conditioning.
