Key West Fishing Report

Key West fishing report sailfish release

Key West fishing report had some amazing weather for the last week before Thanksgiving. Winds were variable some days southeast some days east some days north east. All in all they were light to moderate and full of great fishing. Makes for fun days on board the “INXS” our 47Ft Viking.

Mahi In The Key West Fishing Report

If I did not know any better, I would suspect that I was still fishing in the middle of summer, judging by all of the mahi-mahi we were catching this past week. While it’s not unusual to catch a mahi-mahi or two in late November. It might be a bit unusual to catch a bunch in a half or six hour fishing charter. That’s just what we did each day had a good catch of just above average sized mahi-mahi. That made for great days with some meat in the box. Add that to the blackfin tuna’s, we were catching, and it made for a great seafood feast for other people.

Sailfish Is The Big Story

Fishing through these last couple of weeks before Thanksgiving has been extra exciting with a chance at some of these very large Atlantic Sailfish moving through. We’ve had double hook ups, big singles on the troll, and we are seeing some smaller fish showing up on the reef chasing the limited bait we have. Typically in November we have a very, very large schools of Ballyhoo on the reef and so far they have yet to show up in mass numbers. However, offshore the Sailfish are chasing the flying fish and showing our people a good bit of fun. One of our folks mounted a Sailfish through Grays taxidermy here in Key West that was over 90 inches long.

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving Dinner in Key West

Large sailfish are fun no matter when we catch them.

The Extras

Catching Sailfish tuna mahi and wahoo is always a lot of fun when trolling. This time of year we get into some extra extras due to the cooler temps on the reef. I never hurts to spend a little time on the reef with our deep trolls, set very deep and a slower trolling motion to look for good size mutton, snappers, black groupers, and kingfish. In addition to those species, there are also some very large Sierra mackerels moving through making waste of the bait.  I would certainly say that the winter time we catch the most number of species compared to Summer and what’s really cool about that is we don’t have to go far. So if it’s sloppy, we can still fish.

Booking A Key West Fishing Charter

Many folks visit Key West during the holidays Thanksgiving and Christmas week just past New Year’s are extremely busy for us Key West charter boats. So booking ahead is critical. Looking at my schedule on the INXS for Christmas week, I still have a couple of few days open, but it’s starting to fill up. Many folks like to choose the four hour option so I have some doubles. Traditionally a great time to fish deep sea off of Key West. Thanksgiving weekend is pretty much sold out for us here on board the INXS but you should call us anyway we will give you a reference for one of the colleagues that we know. Do a great job.
