January sailfishing in Key West is really heating up. We opened up the year on a full day deep Sea Fishing, charter with a beautiful day really fun people and some great sailfish action. Although a little cold for my taste, the temperature was in the low 60s to start off our morning. But the winds were about 5 kn out of the NNE. So I was I was trolling up wind jacket on down wind. Jacket off.
No live bait needed roe trolled naked ballyhoo without skirts and got plenty of action. About five Fish knocked our baits out of the outriggers and tried to eat them. We did all the tricks to entice them to strike harder, even dropping them back and letting them have the meal for free. Some were too small others just gave up or stole our bait. One of the fish were landed was over 80 inches. The other was about 25 pounds. It was the first selfish for both of the lady anglers.
Day Before Full Moon
From the months of October through March, we are always super excited when somebody books us for a full day the day before the full moon. We know that gives us the best chance for a big wahoo and yesterday did not disappoint. Our hunt was not specifically for Sailfish initially it was for wahoo. We were successful after boating a full moon wahoo at almost 50 pounds before 9 AM.
Kingfish Bi Catch
Along the way where we were fishing for the wahoo, there was a good number of kingfish showing up on our GARMIN GSD 28 sonar, so we rigged one of our baits to focus on them. By dropping one of our Cannon electric downrigger’s to about 55 feet it was “game on” five different times with some smoked kingfish fish dip in the box. Its nice having the right tools..
Deep Sea Fishing Forecast
It looks like the weather is going to be amazing up until about the ninth or 10th where we get a little bit of a blow, but not too bad. Then it will settle down for a few days for a good blow on the 17th of January according to the long range forecast. Typically I say that January is a 50-50 month 50% of the time it’s gonna be windy the other 50% of the time it’ll be beautiful. Remember those light Southeast winds in the winter time can bring in some mahi-mahi and we are also waiting for the tuna to start popping on the regular here any day.
