Mahi Mahi February

Mahi Mahi February

Mahi Mahi February – finally the weather breaks and the winds came out of the South East for a good bit of time. Winds were about 10-15 knots most days last week ushering in some late spring like Mahi Mahi fishing. Not something we can count on seasonally but it sure can be a welcome change when everything else is kinda “off”.

Key West Deep Sea Fishing Report

With the colder temps and the Northerly winds putting together a box of fish that was not diluted with kingfish and cero mackerels was pretty tough. The tunas have not been easy to come by for us on the INXS so the reef was all we had in the way of deep sea fishing here in Key West. Nice size kingfish with some good sized cero mackerels to make the day were the usual during the cold days. Great for rod bending and amazing smoked fish dip recipes and ceviche.

Until!

The South Easterly winds started to prevail in our weather patterns. Up came the air temps, the weed lines starting filing in a good line at several levels and the Gulf Stream was very close with a rippin’ 3+ knot current..  Now.. One would think that the crystal clear waters of the Gulf Stream was where the Mahi Mahi February action was but not really. There was this big wide patch of greenish water between the reef and the stream that had all the Mahi Mahi in it.

As we worked the weed lines just inside the green edge of the Gulf Stream we found that there were a good number of Mahi on them. Some groups of schoolies and then some pretty good sized fish exceeding 20lbs and a few in the teens. All in the green water for us.

Pro Tips

Trolling in the green water we had 2 lures with Bally hoo in our spread. Both pink-ish and the rest were naked.. Down deep we had one lure (pinkish) and one naked. The larger Mahi Mahi we caught hit the pinkish lures on top and the smaller schoolies and undersized fish busted up our naked baits. Nothing hit our down rigger baits. – Weird.

I always tell people to look at the Key West fish species calendar before coming to Key West defined out what’s available to fish for. I’m pretty sure that not many of them will have mahi-mahi February in them. However stranger things happen.

The Fishing Forecast

As I write this there is a cold front bearing down on us scheduled to hit tonight (Sunday). Winds will go Northerly and smoking! Looks like the winds will settle by Tuesday afternoon then come around to the South East again. There may be a good shot at more Mahi on Wednesday and Friday – Sunday (Thursday looks super sporty) with another front coming through by next week. We should be starting to wane off the cold fronts mid march then have the Ides Of March show up with Easterlies at 20+ for a bit. Call us.. We will let you know what we think about the Long Range Forecast.

Last note… Full Moon is on the 3rd of March.

Book A Fishing Charter Tips

We are coming into prime season for fishing Key West. It’s always a good idea to look at the long range forecast before booking your charter, if you can. Typically in March you can use that tip to book your trips. However, April May and June you may not get your boat with last minute bookings. It is always a good idea to call your charter boat directly and avoid non-local Fishing charter booking services. This way you know exactly who you’re fishing with what you’re gonna get, which boat you will be on exactly and develop a personal relationship with your favorite fishing charter right off the bat.
