Fishing report for Key West deep sea fishing August 28th has very summer light conditions, light winds and long distances my most occasions to get to the fish. That said – the fish are there.
Good Size Mahi
Key West deep sea fishing reports for August and September are typically about the dog days of summer. Mahi-mahi are typically the focus this time of year and nothing has changed except for the average size of the mahi we are catching here off of Key West. This year just like last year our mahi are running larger than chicken or schoolie size. We have had some days in August that have had 25 inch dolphin being our smallest fish. (20″ is legal size). The numbers are there as well. Our full day trips have been producing some good numbers when we are able to get really far offshore out to about 2000 feet of water or for those that know the area just past the wall. Even a 6 hour trip gets us in the fish. A 4 hour trip is possible but not our best advantage.

Wahoo On The Menu.
The wahoo have definitely been in the mix, you never know when we will pull the baits by a hungry wahoo. We we were always pulling baits that they will enjoy eating. Generally, our wahoo bite will be better during the days before a full moon and the new moon. Almost a guarantee is when we find a floating target that is longer and going down into the water. There is usually one and sometimes three hanging around that looking for an easy meal swimming by.

Definitely A Mixed Bag
Although mahi and wahoo are certainly a focus, there are also plenty of barracuda’s out there to keep us entertained in between those targeted species. Seems like when we least expect it a barracuda comes up and munches on one of our baits. Some folks really enjoy it as it’s a rod bender other folks poo poo the barracuda as a trash fish either way, there’s really nothing we can do to prevent them from eating whatever we’re pulling. We do not encourage people to eat barracuda simply because we have better fish to eat.
Sailfish are an additional species that this time of year you’re really never know when they’re gonna show up but when they do, they are certainly a great crowd pleaser. Generally when we do catch a selfish this time of year, it’s a very large fish and fights really well.
Key West Fishing Report Forecast For September
It’s really hard to believe that it’s already September with all the holiday seasons, coming even quicker. The great news is it looks like we will not have any serious tropical systems breathing down our necks like a typical September. So I would not be afraid to book a Key West fishing charter this year for the month of September or October. Take advantage of the great room rates and the improving weather where it stops being so hot. And remember, if that changes, our cancellation policy is very easy.
Without any changes in the weather, I don’t see a change in our mahi-mahi fishing I do, however, see an improvement in our wahoo fishing during the full new moons all the way through February.
