May Mahi Mayhem

May Mahi Mayhem

Key West Deep Sea Fishing Report

It has been May Mahi Mayhem here in Key West on board the INXS. Garrett and I have been super busy catering to all the fine folks that have come out and whacked some fish meat on board our 47 ft Viking and this years Mahi dolphin season has been exceptional.

First we would like to thank everyone who has fished with us these past few weeks and their generosity we have been delighted to send them home with some nice trophies and good eating fish from our bountiful waters here off of Key West.

I will say these last few weeks have been very good on the ego. The Gulf Stream has been super close in most cases just 15-20 minutes run the from our dock at Oceans Edge Resort and Marina on Stock Island. The fish are right where they are supposed to be. Under birds, around floating objects and under large patches of grass. All text book spots for good mahi dolphin fishing.

May Mahi Mayhem
Two very nice bull mahi dolphin we caught last week on board the INXS.

Usually this time of the year we discourage the 4 hour charter but frankly there were several trips in the last week that have produced enough mahi dolphin that our folks had enough. The weed lines have been productive on the calmer days and hampering on the rougher days. When the winds pick up the long thick weed lines get blown apart making it difficult to not only find the mahi but keep our baits clean to catch them.

The Fishing Forecast

Through the end of May into June I see the forecast remains the same. East to South East winds 5-15 knots through the long range forecast. The current looks like it will stay near or close to the reef keeping our runs shorter than typical for this time of the year. The weed will be plenty making trolling difficult but productive if we put in the time. Plenty of fish should be coming through to keep our folks happy.

I really love this time of the year as the fishing goes full throttle and the weather starts to get figured out as we settle into our summer patterns. Ys it is warm but what a great time to visit Key West and go fishing or enjoy any of our other water activities such as sand bar trips or snorkeling. At night stay cool in the tropics by visiting some Key West restaurants
